According to Bloomberg citing informed sources, Russia is about to begin piloting cryptocurrency exchanges and the use of digital tokens for cross-border transactions, in order to help domestic companies alleviate payment difficulties caused by international sanctions. If the experiment is successful, cryptocurrency exchanges may start operating next year.

Two informed sources stated that the trial will begin on September 1st, and during the testing of payment and trading platforms, Russia will use the National Payment Card System to exchange rubles and cryptocurrencies.

The Russian parliament passed a bill in July this year to legalize cryptocurrency mining and establish a framework to allow testing of digital tokens for cross-border payments under central bank supervision. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed these bills into law on August 8th.

The National Payment Card System was created by the Russian Central Bank in 2014 and currently operates Mir cards and the Russian Instant Interbank Payment Settlement System. According to informed sources, the official choice of this network for cryptocurrency trading testing is because it already has infrastructure such as interbank settlement and clearing functions, and is fully regulated by the central bank.

Insiders have revealed that if the experiment is successful, Russia may allow the Moscow Exchange and St. Petersburg Currency Exchange to establish cryptocurrency platforms next year. According to informed sources, any existing cryptocurrency can be used in this experiment.

The Russian media "Gongshang Daily" also published a similar report last week, and insiders revealed that Russia may plan to create two cryptocurrency exchanges to support foreign economic activities. The main focus of these exchanges is related to the creation of a stable currency. It is said that the Russian authorities are considering developing a stable currency linked to the Chinese renminbi and a basket of BRICS currencies.
